Foreign purchaser additional duty

When we are tasked with delivering major legislative reform, our aim is to create simple ways for our customers to understand their obligations without burdening them with unnecessary red tape.

With this in mind, we focused on efficiency and innovation to implement the 2015-16 State Budget foreign purchaser additional duty initiative for Victorian property buyers.

To drive the project and overcome the challenges of a tight timeframe, our experts developed core administrative requirements while the legislation was still being debated and modified in State Parliament. This strategy supported a flexible and collaborative work plan and focused on two essentials to guarantee success: finding an easy way for customers to identify themselves as foreign purchasers when buying a property, and educating them about their new obligations. Consequently, we introduced new administrative processes and procedures, developed IT system changes and liaised heavily with industry stakeholders to ensure a smooth implementation, by 1 July 2015.

Customers can now assess their foreign purchaser duty online from the convenience of their home or office, and refer to our website for easy-to-find information, real-life examples and calculators.
